I'm running an install + build from scratch on an EC2 machine that I booted up. Running into some problems. Launched an Ubuntu instance. Inside of the cloned Daft repo, I'm running
make .venv
. This fails with an error "distutils module not found". I tried running using Python 3.9 and 3.12, but to no avail on either. Anyhoo, I tried circumventing that problem by using
uv
to create and manage the .venv. I ran:
uv v --python 3.9 # create the .venv for python 3.9

source .venv/bin/activate

uv sync # this fails

uv pip install maturin
make build # this failed with a linker error, so I installed the `cc` linker

sudo apt install build-essentials --fix-all -y # this command failed, but seemed to install the linker

make build # this one is working now...
Nvm, the last command failed with another linker error. Not sure why this process is so difficult...

Here’s my bootstrapping commands
Copy code
sudo yum install git gcc gcc-c++ kernel-devel make python-devel
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf <https://sh.rustup.rs> | sh
source "$HOME/.cargo/env"

git clone <https://github.com/Eventual-Inc/Daft.git>
cd Daft/
make .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
make build-release

aws configure sso

But I'm curious as to why
make .venv
was failing for me. Seems like that one is extremely important to run during this entire installation process...

I think
uv
is a good idea, but you might need the yum installs that I have in there

I'm running the suggested installation right now.

I'll try install those things inside of my uv env.
Just seems like our build script is very non-portable to different targets? Which doesn't seem right to me since I presume we build for many different targets on many different machines.

sudo yum install git gcc gcc-c++ kernel-devel make python-devel
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
source "$HOME/.cargo/env"
git clone https://github.com/Eventual-Inc/Daft.git
cd Daft/
make .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
make build-release
aws configure sso
@jay this is so nice lol. I always just, hey chatgpt give me a command to install git python rust etc. etc. every single time lmao. maybe we should have a daft-dev ami?

A daft-dev AMI template sounds nice right about now

Mine literally just lives as a sticky note on my computer

stickynote AMI
AMI is a little overkill I think. We can just have a bunch of
.sh
setup scripts in our repo
The issue is that these machines don’t come with all the build dependencies installed (python-devel, gcc etc). Also different machines use different packaging mechanisms (yum vs apt).
